the r.d.m. band, with singer milton campbell, were from maple shade, new jersey and recorded two virtue singles in 1969. they released their final 45 on the obscure zoom records label in the early 70s. “give up” and “how can i get in touch with you” can also be found on the tramp records album “virtue recording studios”.

it is making my blood boil. man, my jaw is hanging down listening to this stuff. read the email from butthole surfers man and producer, paul leary, when he heard the demo for what would become the debut philipp gorbachev & the naked man album. philipp gorbachev, the russian musician and dj, has been throwing killer parties and making some of the most innovative and exciting electronic music to come out of moscow in years. in 2014 he released his debut album silver album but when invited to perform a live boiler room he had something else in mind: a band scenario. the resulting concoction was not something locked into a 4/4 beat but rather a much more organic, groove-based sound with funk-strutting bass lines and live drums that rolled and flurried around the beats that jumped around leading the charge of the songs along with gorbachev’s damo suzuki-like vocals. taking that experiment into the studio, i dont give a snare is a wild ride that jumps genres, switches paces and alters tones frequently. the opening goodman exploding in intense rhythms and heavy, spiralling riffs that at times recall sabbath but the ever-shifting drums and gargling electronics give a wonky freshness that feels impossible to place into genre. whilst gorbachev cites a range of influences from beck to blind willie johnson as being core to him, the primary motivation is the live nature of the project itself. the main influence is the constant live experience we have as music players and performers. i want to get the most out of every party, every jam, and every dancefloor.

zum einen sind da die verschwommenen, direkten songs von „never going home“ mit denen hazel english ihre erste aufmerksamkeit erlangte, zum anderen ist auf „just give in“ die blühende, kreative partnerschaft mit jackson philips (aka day wave) zu hören. die beiden trafen sich, als hazel in ihrer wahlheimat oakland in einem buchladen arbeitete und jackson, auf dem weg seinen synthesizer reparieren zu lassen, kurz vorbeischaute. die beiden kamen ins gespräch und beschlossen kurz darauf zusammen musik zu machen. eine zufallsbekanntschaft ohne die diese doppel-ep vermutlich nie zu stande gekommen wäre. jeder der songs hat eine zeitlose, sonnengeküsste Ästethik inne, die von hazels direktem stil und ihrer pop-sensibilität nochmals hervorgehoben wird. hochansteckender dream-pop trifft auf ehrliches songwriting. auf einem beach-pop-fundament aufbauend schafft es hazel english mit „just give in / never going home“ einen vibe zu erschaffen, der sich in jeder umgebung wohlfühlt.

hailing from japan, iori wakasa is a name that has been gathering a great deal of hype over the past few years - and with good reason. having built up his skills as a majorly talented dj in tokyo spinning a wide range of sounds and styles, his reputation continues to grow at pace thanks to a string of amazing releases on labels such as highgrade and wirsindeins in recent years - not to mention strong support by some of the scenes biggest names. here he proves what all the fuss is about - a stunning three track ep on steve bugs dessous recordings. be there starts things off right - uber deep vibes throughout, with bubbling synths and spacey effects, all tied together by a hypnotic chandler-esque rhythm track. give me continues the vibe, deep and jazzy chords punctuate the shuffling rhythm and trippy vocal samples add a layer of wonkiness that will see this get a lot of attention. feel it dizzy strips things down a notch, a bass heavy dancefloor filler with dubbed out percussion, effects and vocals snippets. a triumphant ep from iori wakasa - truly one to watch.

after recording various psych soul and funk tracks on the whiz record label the real thing carried on after leaving the label to record more studio cuts with musician and producer stu gardner. here they let it rip with an incredible fast version of james browns *give it up, turnit loose* ... and they left in that all important secret ingredient of a lovely long drum break. stu gardner himself took to the microphone on this track, with various background vocals and screams, and did the vocals for the amazing b-side *it s a family thang*!
